What is it about?

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a common disease in the field of ear, nose and throat. It is often very difficult to treat and traditional treatments for CRS are not successful in controlling patient symptoms. Therapeutic ultrasound (US) is one of the most widely used physical agents in physiotherapy. This study showed that the continuous US may be used as an effective modality in the treatment of patients with CRS.

Why is it important?

The antibiotics are commonly prescribed by physicians for the treatment of CRS. However, antibiotics do not alter the long-term outcomes. In this study, the resolution of CRS observed in some patients may indicate that following treatment with US, the bacteria in the sinuses of the patients had been cleared. Thus, the continuous US may be prescribed as an adjunct option in the pragmatic treatment of patients with CRS.

Perspectives

This study found that the continuous US is an effective therapeutic modality for patients with CRS. The findings have provided an insight into the treatment of CRS and suggest that there are effects beyond a placebo using US for the treatment of patients with CRS.
