What is it about?

Acute liver failure is a rapid and severe decline in liver function, in the absence of pre-existing liver disease. Although acute liver failure is rare, it often affects young patients and without prompt specialised care, has a high mortality. This article explains the causes of acute liver failure, provides a table of key investigations and discusses the important clinical challenges in caring for a patient with acute liver failure. A systematic guide to managing patients with acute liver failure is provided, as are indications for referral to a liver transplant centre.
