What is it about?
Metabolic acidosis is a commonly encountered condition in hospitalised patients. Proper evaluation and work-up can often lead to the diagnosis of the underlying disease responsible for the development of acidosis and the instigation of appropriate treatment. However, the process can be challenging and complex, especially when multiple disease processes exist simultaneously. Understanding the basic pathophysiological process and a systematic step-wise approach presented in this paper can be helpful in such complicated clinical scenarios.
