What is it about?

The article is to encourage endoscopy service users to be aware of manufacturers instructions for use (IFUs) prior to purchasing equipment and to look for updates over time to ensure that items are used/reprocessed appropriately and safely. It is essential that users are aware of the equipment needed to reprocess items.

Why is it important?

IFUs provide the framework regulating use and reprocessing of equipment to a safe standard so that it can be used on subsequent patients. It provides the legal framework if equipment fails or causes harm. If IFUs are not followed then legal liability can transfer to the organisation. IFUs will also be subject to amendments over time which can change how they are used and reprocessed.

Perspectives

I hope that this article will remind readers of the clinical and legal importance of following manufacturers instructions. There have been instances, particularly in decontamination, where IFUs have changed and services have not noted or changed their practice which potentially causes a risk to patients health.
