What is it about?

The development of occupational therapy in a new (at time of publication) forensic addictive behaviours unit within a high security forensic psychiatric hospital.

Why is it important?

The first specialist dual diagnostic unit within a forensic mental health unit in Europe and the first specialist programme for occupational therapy in dual diagnosis in a high secure setting.

Perspectives

I enjoyed collaborating on this article with Dr David M Forshaw, who led the development of the then Forensic Addictions Unit. This was among many 'firsts' as the hospital developed under new management. The occupational therapy programme was fully funded and genuinely supported by an excellent specialist multidisciplinary team. Sadly now it has closed and , to my knowledge, no similar units were created.
