Why is it important?

ACP has been identified in the NHS long term workforce plan as key to achieving its objectives and has been earmarked for significant expansion. This article explores the evidence base for claims made about the benefits of the role and identifies where further research is needed.

Perspectives

This literature review was undertaken as part of the author’s PhD studies where it helped to hone down a focus for subsequent research. It helped to identify where further research is not needed (E.g. definitions of ACP, and broad research to establish the positive effect ACPs have on clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction etc). It was clear that whilst several key stakeholders had been involved in previous research, there was a limited amount that came from ACPs own experience and whether the role is producing personal benefits for them.
