What is it about?

The term ‘inclusion’ has historically been linked to compulsory education, particularly for students with disabilities. However, its use is expanding to encompass equity and social justice for all demographic groups (Ainscow, 2020). Recent political and social movements, including Black Lives Matter and #MeToo, have gained significant traction within universities. Campaigns and events such as Black History Month and LGBTQ+ History Month are now commonplace on many campuses, but it is worth noting that equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) is a legal obligation under the Equality Act 2010 in the UK (Stentiford and Koutsouris, 2022). This pursuit of inclusion has increased emphasis on educational practices, particularly at the higher education institution (HEI) level, encouraging HEI educators to adopt inclusive approaches to improve their pedagogy (Advance HE, 2025). Here are 10 suggestions to help you create an inclusive curriculum.

Perspectives

An inclusive curriculum is key to this transformation in HE education.. It fosters equity and social justice, supports workforce diversity, addresses implicit bias, aids in retention, reduces burnout, and leverages innovative solutions to ultimately provide better patient care.
