What is it about?

This article explains how one university improved mental health content in nursing courses. It shows why mental health skills are important for all nurses and describes steps like adding specialist teaching, simulation, and field identity support. The goal is to prepare students to feel confident and competent when caring for people with mental health needs.

Why is it important?

Mental health problems are common, and nurses often care for people with these needs. If nursing courses don’t include enough mental health training, students may feel unprepared and anxious in practice. Strengthening mental health content helps future nurses build confidence, provide safe care, and support recovery for patients.

Perspectives

As a mental health nurse academic, I value this publication because it tackles the dilution of mental health identity in nursing education. Strengthening field-specific content is vital to prepare confident, skilled nurses and ensure mental health care gets the attention it deserves.
