What is it about?
Bacteria in the intestines are increasingly becoming resistant to the antibiotics, drugs and medicines used to treat infections caused by them. This commentary gives a history of bacteria and resistance and advice on infection prevention and control measures

Why is it important?
I talk about how we have reduced infections before and give an overview of what could be done to control infections caused by these resistant bacteria now and point the way to national guidelines
Perspectives
I enjoyed writing this commentary and reflecting on my career since the early 1990's. I have made some humorous observations and tried to balance this with the seriousness of multi-drug resistant bacteria. I hope that this helps nurses understand how far we have come with control of infections and the work still yet to be done
