What is it about?

A cancer diagnosis can have a devastating effect on the individual. Emphasis is placed on delivering this news well and in providing the appropriate support to appease ensuing fears and anxieties. Assessment is deemed beneficial to ensuring an appropriate plan of care, although this should be taken into context. The role of cancer nurses is pivotal in the management of this patient group.

Why is it important?

Observation and reflection on one's practice is beneficial to identifying problems and devising care to ensure the best patient outcomes. Reflection on practice and publication of subsequent finding contributes to learning and thus improving practice outcomes both in-house and within the wider context.

Perspectives

My writing aspirations are primarily inspired by observations and reflections on my practice. The main focus is in identifying problems or concerns, and if appropriate, try to address these through my writing. Writing this article was somewhat challenging. Whilst I knew what I wanted to say, contextualising this was very hard. Nevertheless, with the help of the reviewers and their constructive feedback, I'm very happy with the published article. I believe the issues addressed are very relevant to practice in all aspects of cancer nursing.
