Why is it important?
The effects of hyperemesis gravidarum has been historically underappreciated and care has focused solely on the management of the physical nausea and vomiting. This paper demonstrates the far reaching effects the condition can have on a woman's life and particularly her mental health and calls for an holistic approach to care.
Perspectives
The evidence has been here for decades but by pooling it in a systematic review the information is made accessible for healthcare professionals caring for the women affected by this awful condition. It's not really surprising that severe and prolonged nausea and vomiting lasting months would take a toll on one's mental health; this review demonstrates the extent of the problem.
