What is it about?

The virus which causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) was first identified in 1984. This article focuses on the developments in HIV testing in antenatal care and the information required for effective pre- and post-HIV test discussions. In addition, the author suggests that midwives play a pivotal role in health education, necessitating clinical updating and exploration of attitudes in this emotive field. Finally, the article argues that midwives should refer to a specialist HIV team, to optimise the care of HIV-infected clients.
