What is it about?

The wellbeing of staff working in inpatient psychiatric wards is important as this impacts staff retention and also the quality of care provided. However, staff burnout is common in the NHS, which has many problematic consequences. We evaluated staff burnout in an inpatient psychiatric ward and also identified some of the factors that contribute to staff wellbeing.

Why is it important?

The factors that were found to impact staff wellbeing and burnout included staffing, patient presentations, the physical work environment, work-life balance, and a sense of autonomy. Knowing this means that employers might better understanding what can lead to staff burnout in order to implement preventative strategies and improve the wellbeing of staff.

Perspectives

Supporting this work and writing this article was a pleasure as I got to work with co-authors that I have never worked with before. This meant that I had the opportunity to support research in a brand new area for me.
