What is it about?

This is a paper that looks at the experience of NHS staff during the pandemic, what happened to them and why this is important. The review is published at the same time as the people plan and it explains why the people plan needs to focus on staff recovery as much as the other things contained within it.

Why is it important?

It is important so that our NHS staff are not being asked to do extra and important things when they are not firing on all cylinders. Yes we want to have more staff, yes we want to retain our existing staff and ensure that they can adapt and change the role they are in. In order to do that, they will need to ensure existing staff are well and able to take on the additional challenges.

Perspectives

The NHS workforce have done an amazing job in really extreme circumstances through the pandemic. Asking for more without recognising the need to restore energy, wellbeing and how people feel about their work defies the evidence needed for a proper recovery of our workforce.
