What is it about?

The use of honey in wound management has been well documented back to the ancient Egyptians, with new advances in wound management and an overwhelming concern of antibiotic resistance Manuka honey could become a useful tool as part of a holistic/natural route for managing wounds.

Why is it important?

Manuka unique mechanism of action makes it an ideal product for use in necrotic and devitalized wounds, the natural osmotic effect can aid in autolytic debridement, but it also provides anti-inflammatory effects and antimicrobial effects that is effective against biofilms and multidrug resistant bacteria. The use sterilised manuka honey should be considered due to the risk of botulism found in raw honey.

Perspectives

I hope this article will highlight the importance of using sterilised medical grade honey products over the use of raw honey bought from general health stores. Despite that there has not been any documented cases of wound botulism to date as medical professionals we have a responsibility to our patients to not take those kind of risks.
