What is it about?

Cold atmospheric plasma is an innovative method for treating wounds. It can not only inactivate bacteria and other pathogens in the wound, but also promote wound healing itself. Especially in chronic wounds, plasma has been shown in various studies to have an extremely positive effect on healing. However, the underlying mechanism is not yet fully understood. Here we provide a clue to the relationship between the application of cold plasma and the pH in the wound. Since an alkaline pH is also associated with chronic wounds, understanding the regulating influence of cold plasma is an important step in understanding the underlying mechanisms. A modern, mobile plasma device was used, which also provides the patient and user with the unique opportunity to use the device in a home environment.

Why is it important?

Chronic wounds are defined as wounds that persist after 6 weeks. This is obviously a great burden for the patients. The application of cold plasma can help many patients and promote wound healing. To better understand the underlying effect, close observation of wound parameters is helpful. Here, the present pilot study gives an indication of a possible mechanism.
