Why is it important?
This article provides a summary of the epidemiology and most commonly used classification systems providing a critical review of these. It also highlights the importance of a high index of suspicion for associated neurovascular injuries anyhow to assess the patient. Provides literature evidence on these and a simplified approach to managing the multi-ligamentous injuries.
Perspectives
Writing this article provided me with greater insight on this relatively uncommon but devastating Orthopaedic injury. I have tried to simplify it to make it easy to digest for the lay reader but also kept enough detail to provide interesting learning points for the Orthopaedic and non-Orthopaedic clinician. It provides information on areas to focus on when assessing patients with suspected knee dislocation/multi-ligamentous knee injuries both in the acute setting and in the elective clinic setting. I hope readers of this article see it as a basis for further critical thinking and evaluation on this interesting but uncommon injury.
