What is it about?

This article outlines an unusual case where unattractive green discolouration of a front tooth occurred following dental bleaching in a young and healthy patient. We carried out research into why this might have occurred in this patient and how it was, and how it can be, managed conservatively in general practice.

Why is it important?

We discuss the likely cause of this phenomenon and caution general dental practitioners on steps to take to avoid this same unattractive, and distressing discolouration from occurring in their own patients.

Perspectives

I hope that this article showcases to dental practitioners an unusual treatment complication which can arise from dental bleaching, a procedure which is becoming increasingly popular among patients, and can have distressing outcomes if not carried out with care. I hope that general practitioners will also find the tips on case selection and how to avoid this phenomenon useful to their own practice as well.
