What is it about?

Patient safety can be challenging to teach in the classroom. Using simulated patient journeys and the patient safety incident framework allows nursing students to explore the reality of patient safety and respond to clinical incidents in a supportive educational environment.

Why is it important?

It is important that students understand their role in delivering safe patient care and being able to escalate concerns as well as implementing change that reduces the risk.

Perspectives

It is not enough to teach students about historical institutional failings in healthcare. This paper demonstrates how simulation of clinical incidents combined with analytical activities, debriefing and reflection allow students to gain practical skills that will improve the safety of patients in their care.
