What is it about?

This article studies how university students in eight countries use tablets and other mobile devices, and how these practices can be guided by teachers to promote more meaningful, autonomous, and ubiquitous learning in higher education.

Why is it important?

The research reveals that tablets are widely present but still little used with clear pedagogical purposes in university classrooms. By evidencing their potential to develop digital, cognitive, and communicative competences, the article offers university educators concrete arguments to integrate tablets into their teaching and to redesign activities that connect students’ everyday digital uses with formal learning

Perspectives

As a coauthor and university educator, I see this work as a call for teacher training focused on didactic uses of tablets, beyond their purely recreational or instrumental functions. I am convinced that, if we intentionally design activities around mobile devices, we can foster more active, reflective, and self-regulated learning processes in our students, aligned with the demands of the Knowledge Society
