What is it about?

TGF-b1 was able stimulated calcium uptake in short term incubations (2 and 20 min). In contrast to the rapid stimulation of 45-Ca2+ uptake previously observed in response to FSH (<1 min), the response to TGF-b1 required several hours and was abolished by actinomycin-D. Although TGF-b1 had no effect on basal calcium uptake before 1 h, it completely inhibited the FSH-stimulated calcium uptake in short term incubations (2 and 20 min).

Why is it important?

These effects on calcium metabolism may be directly related to the ability of TGF-b1 to regulate cell growth and differentiation.

Perspectives

It should be noted that TGF-b1 also upregulates the expression of the Na+/Ca2+ exchanger (NCX), which extrude Ca2+ from cells.
