What is it about?
An overview on the microbial cellular mechanism for biodegradation highlighting the microbial adaptations by catabolic evolution and impact on the biodegradation mechanism due to metals. Moreover, metabolic engineering and bio-catalytic applications of the POPs degradation machinery of native microbiota as well as genetically engineered microorganisms have been specified

Why is it important?
The literature describes the various aspects of POP biodegradation. Fundamental and applied biomolecular techniques for in-situ and ex-situ biodegradation using native and genetically engineered microorganisms have been explored.
Perspectives
The strategies adopted by microbial communities through catabolic evolution and successful metabolic engineering techniques for biodegradation are discussed in this chapter to enable budding researchers to design and strategize better bioremediation process. Whilst investigating the various possibilities of biodegradation it is imperative to seek effective application strategies for minimizing the impact of the existing POPs on the environment and human health
