What is it about?

Affordable housing is a major challenge for developing and developed countries. In developing countries, land administration and planning systems are often inadequate. Collective ownership and alternative farming models could help deliver food security and meet housing needs. In the UK, growing homelessness, poverty and inadequate public housing supply is unlikely to be remedied by financialised corporate provision.

Why is it important?

Contention around housing has, since the time of Tiberius Gracchus in Rome, catalysed revolutionary change. Current systems are failing millions who live in squalor in slums in Nairobi or Rio. In the UK, deferring to the Private Rented Sector has enriched elites at public expense, compromised quality and alienated a growing underclass.

Perspectives

The housing crisis is fragmenting societies around the world. Integrated solutions, involve principled leadership, informed administration, tax reforms, governance and local partnerships.
