What is it about?

In this chapter, we critique the ways that understandings of 'normal development' can, however unintentionally, frame different developmental trajectories as problematic and even pathological, especially in the context of children's rehabilitation.

Why is it important?

This work adds to scholarship, especially in the field of critical psychology, that challenges the ways that unquestioned developmental 'norms' are taken up and enacted in ways that can be harmful to children and youth whose development follows a different trajectory, and their families.

Perspectives

The arguments we present in this chapter can be used to promote ways to value a wider range of ways of being, growing, and becoming.
