What is it about?

Internal crack detection in asphalt pavements is a big issue. It is crucial to detect them at an early stage in order to define an appropriate strategy to avoid potholes generation and to ensure a long life to the road. A new microphone-based method was proposed to recognize the presence of internal cracks in a non-destructive way. This method is based on the analysis of the acoustic response of road pavements to the traffic load.

Why is it important?

Results show that is possible to detect cracks and defects. This information can help the subjects that are responsible for the maintenance and the rehabilitation of the roads to improve their efficiency. This method can be used as as a objective decision support tool. On the other hand, the advantage for the users of the roads is to use transportation infrastructures that provide a constant level of comfort and safety.

Perspectives

I hope that this paper will help different subjects, such as authorities, researchers, enterprises, and people, to solve problems related to safety, comfort, management, performance evaluation, costs reduction, time saving.
