What is it about?
Evaporites play a key role in the petroleum systems of the Sergipe-Alagoas Basin, Brazil. However, few research has been focused on the oldest evaporites of the basin (Horizonte and Paripueira salts located in the Alagoas Sub-Basin). We conducted a detailed structural characterization of these evaporites that were deposited in the rift section of the Alagoas Sub-Basin. Our work provides insights into the geological evolution of this area of the basin.

Why is it important?
The structural relationship between the Horizonte and Paripueira evaporites and the rift deposits of the Alagoas Sub-Basin has been for the first time shown in detail by this research. We differentiate the tectonic setting of these evaporites from the younger, Ibura Salt, which occurs across the onshore and offshore portions of the Sergipe-Alagoas Basin.
Perspectives
This research represents some of the results of my master's degree at the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, which was supervised by my co-authors. The collaboration with my supervisors and other university staff and peers was great and provided me with the chance to learn new scientific methods and concepts. We hope this work can contribute to the understanding of the geological evolution of the Sergipe-Alagoas Basin and its context in the Brazilian continental margin. We also hope that the insights brought by our paper can be useful for the hydrocarbons exploration in the onshore area of Alagoas.
