What is it about?

We describe how advanced depth imaging on a wide azimuth land dataset lead to much improved lateral positioning of faults. The improvements in focusing and positioning reduce drilling risks by improving the accuracy of the interpretation.

Why is it important?

We illustrate with this case study that lateral velocity variations cannot be ignored when it comes to accurate positioning of faults. This is important as it can have significant impact on well pick, with lateral variations of several tens of meters.

Perspectives

I think this is a nice example of a phenomenon which is somehow well-known but not always easy to quantify and visualize. We were lucky to find the right geological setting and the right well information to put this work together and share it with the community.
