What is it about?

Seismic imaging, even in time, is commonly a user-interactive task, in which subsurface velocities have to be estimated in advance. We present a fully data-driven strategy, in which highly resolved time images of the subsurface can be gained through coherence measurements and the focusing and defocusing of the data.

Why is it important?

Seismic data volumes rapidly increase in size and turnaround times matter - two important reasons why time imaging still forms a central ingredient in the seismologist's toolbox. To confront these challenges, the presented strategy fully automates this process while retaining image resolution crucial for successful interpretation.

Perspectives

Stable and automated time imaging will likely be of specific interest, when rapid turnaround times are desired and I foresee interesting applications across a variety of scales in exploration and in academia.
