What is it about?

We provide laboratory measurements with the press. During the loading we measure ultrasonic velocities in shale samples. Based on measured data we develop further the theorie, which is able to describe obtained dependencies.

Why is it important?

This knowledge may be important for the seismic exploration, monitoring of underground storages and for the study of earthquakes.

Perspectives

I hope this article may attract some attention to the stress dependent properties of the rocks. These effects are very interesting and melt together various disciplines like physics, mathematics, mineralogy and even chemistry. Understanding of these processes would be a great progress for many possible applications in the geophysical field.
