What is it about?

Trying to estimate the velocity field of seismic waves (P-waves) by means of a Full Waveform approach.

Why is it important?

Because we try to invert the observed seismi data by menas of a stochastic approach, which is less dependent on the choice of the starting model and does not require the a priori knowledge on the true, long-wavelength, velocity field.

Perspectives

The outcomes are satisfactory and the method is promising. The grat advantage is that we can start estimating velocities in a very early stage of exploration, when not much is known about the subsurface we are exploring: no or limited apriori knowledge. Work has to be done to reduce the computing time and to reduce the number of (meaningful) models to be computed. To this end we may exploit the massively parallel nature of the problem and the inclusion of spatial correlation constraints on the tested models.
