What is it about?

When oil and gas are produced out of the Earth, the response of rocks of waves passing there is changed. We use this change to understand where exactly the produced oil and gas come from.

Why is it important?

If we know precisely where oil and gas were produced from, we can place the new wells better, i.e., where there are still untouched resources. In this way, we do not waste money from dry wells.

Perspectives

This paper was the first attempt to use tomography with mathematical constraints to estimate the Earth changes over time, in 3D, for oil and gas production.
