What is it about?

To monitor the subsurface changes, we may need to repeatedly acquire data in the same area, but the cost is massive, especially in the 3D acquisition. We propose a low-cost acquisition design to solve this problem. Our demonstration shows that compared with the traditional fine grid design, it is possibility to acquire data using only 10% of the original cost.

Why is it important?

This low-cost acquisition design can significantly save the acquisition cost, therefore increase the time lapse data acquisition to help monitor the subsurface changes.


I hope this article inspire researchers to think more about acquisition design. Current geometry is mostly equal interval grid. However, this fine grid is costly, and is sufficient but not necessary. I think a low-cost design with fewer samples is a promising direction, and hope more researchers can join this research.
