What is it about?
We found a fungus living among the root cells of wild salt loving rice-like plant. This not only helps the wild plant to grow but also helps commercial rice grow better in saline soil.

Why is it important?
Any aid promoting plant growth, particularly in the saline coasts zone is beneficial for farmers. It not only enhances yield but also saves on fertilizer, lowering the cost of production for the farmer.
Perspectives
The wild salt loving plant, called Oryza coarctata can set rice like grains in seawater. When we discovered the fungus living in its roots and observed it to help other plants grow in saline soil, it seemed like a heavenly gift. Field trials using the fungus as a biofertilizer in both saline and non-saline soils boosted grain production in rice, maize and soybeans.
