What is it about?

An account of why spacer devices help with treatment of patients with asthma taking metered-dose inhalers (puffers), and how to use and look after them properly. When using pMDIs , spacer devices are essential to slow the particles of drug solution so that they do not impact on the lining of the mouther and larynx, and also to allow them time for the volatile propellant to evaporate so that the particles shrink to a size which allows them to penetrate right down to the smallest airways.

Why is it important?

It is important because patients and health carers should understand the benefits of using spacer devices regularly if they are to be motivated to do so. It also explains some of their limitations.

Perspectives

This is a publication of the ADMIT group: a group of health professionals interested in helping patients and their carers to treat asthma better by using inhalers and spacers properly. See our web site https://www.inhalers4u.org/
