Why is it important?
Homelessness has skyrocketed over the past three decades. Homeless service providers struggle to address the needs of homeless persons with substance abuse and mental health problems. Debates about current housing models (e.g., abstinence based versus housing first) are not well informed.
Perspectives
My hope is that the paper facilitates awareness of the limitations of current housing models and the research methods used to study them. We need broader perspectives that integrate various models. Abstinence based recovery homes can play an important role in the continuum of services but they have been overlooked by agencies that subsidize housing.
