A continuum mechanics based analysis of banded structures associated with friction stir weld

What is it about?

This paper probides a quantitative analysis on how banded structures observed in friction welds can be related to material characteristics being welded and pin rotational speed in the context continuum mechanics. Therfore, maximum possible welding speed can be estimated for effective friction stir welding parameter widow development

Why is it important?

This paper introduced a unique shear localization model that can be directly to estimate shear band width and formation time, and therefor shear band propagation speed or welding speed. The modeling results are in good agreement with the experimental data collected in this study and from literature.
