What is it about?

A systematic study of the force–displacement curve of the self-piercing riveting (SPR) process and associated sample characterisation have been carried out in this work. This study shows that the force–displacement curve can be used to monitor the quality of the joint within the same process parameters.

Why is it important?

This research has mainly focused on understanding the physical events involved in the formation of self-pierce riveting joints by characterising and relating the force– displacement curve to the joint’s structure. The study has been carried out by interrupting the formation of SPR joints at different rivet positions. The understanding and knowledge gained from this study could be used for monitoring of the industrial SPR process.
