What is it about?

The feasibility of measuring residual stresses in self-pierce riveted (SPR) joints by neutron diffraction technique was investigated. The main challenge involved dealing with the very small dimensions of SPR joints. It is evident from the residual stress profiles that neutron diffraction technique can successfully predict the position of the rivet leg after flaring in a joint without having to cross-section.

Why is it important?

This is pioneering work to measure residual stress in rivets of relatively small dimensions using neutron beam. So a feasibility test is essencial to get access to neutron beam facilities for any further examination of residual stress in SPR joints.
