Why is it important?

It argues that some of the most important developments in the Dutch language in the early modern period happened not in the Dutch language area, but in London. Furthermore, it argues that this fact is typically overlooked in general histories of the Dutch language.

Perspectives

This article forms part of a larger project which argues that histories of the Dutch language should discuss the use of the language outside as well as inside the Dutch language area.
