What is it about?

Admiration is a developmentally important social emotion that leads us to change in wished directions. What we admire in other people is an important indicator of what we value and, therefore, of who we would like to become. This paper examines the attributes and person types admired by Greek emerging adults, ages 18 to 25. The findings suggest that while there is a high level of cross-cultural consistency in admired attributes, there is also some cultural variation.

Why is it important?

In recent years, there has been a growing concern about the assumingly superficial attributes admired by the young generation, focusing often on fame, money, and sexuality; these attributes are seen as diverting young people's attention from more meaningful and lasting goals. However, our research suggests that the admired characteristics of emerging adults hold the potential to foster a more desirable society, at least if the emerging adults are encouraged to cultivate these positive attributes.

Perspectives

Writing this article was a privilege because it gave me the chance to collaborate with an esteemed colleague. This article sheds light on a topic that is often discussed but never exlicitly investigated: the ideals admired by Greek emerging adults.
