What is it about?

While still a neglected field of study, the research on followership has been grown in recent years. This article explores this recent research to give a full understanding of where the concept has evolved to and concludes that emotional intelligence plays an important role in the establishment of the leader-follower relationship.

Why is it important?

In the leadership equation, the leader is only one half and the follower is the other. Today, the follower plays a more important role than ever before and it is important that leaders and followers alike understand the particulars of this very important role.

Perspectives

Richard Martin is currently an assistant professor and program director for Keuka College’s Adult Studies programs in Criminal Justice in central New York. He is a retired police supervisor from the Rochester, New York, Police Department, a mid-sized city in upstate New York where he served as a patrol supervisor, field training officer, crime scene technician, accident reconstructionist, and police SCUBA diver.
