What is it about?

Clinical shadowing is the observation and attendance of various patient care treatment situations. A vertical integrated curriculum called clinical shadowing program (CSP) was introduced to the predoctoral DMD students at a dental school, to foster integration of basic and clinical sciences and to prepare the students for patient care. The study aimed to assess the perception of faculty members towards CSP.

Why is it important?

This study provides valuable feed-back on CSP integration at one academic institution. The study reported positive faculty perception toward this method of integration. However, opportunities to foster coordination between basic and clinical science educators need to be provided by administrators to strengthen the existing program.

Perspectives

It was a great pleasure to work in collaboration with the co-authors, from conduct of the study to the publication. This article highlights the importance of clinical shadowing in integrating basic and clinical sciences. I hope this would be informative article for administrators to implement integrated curriculum at dental schools.
