What is it about?

Social and mobile media are playing a significant role in the digitization of health sectors globally. New technology provides an opportunity for stakeholders (i.e., patients and healthcare professionals) to engage with each other in virtual environments to discuss health-related issues. This study examines the role of social and mobile media in digitizing the health sector in Pakistan through MARHAM, the platform which is the subject of this case study.

Why is it important?

From a scholarly standpoint, there is a lack of research exploring the role of digitization in public sectors, particularly health. From a Pakistani context, no significant scientific study has been conducted to investigate the role of new media technology in catering to the needs of the people in the health sector. Identifying a substantial gap in established literature, we analyzed the role of the newly developed MARHAM application to facilitate online health communication across Pakistan. We analyzed MARHAM’s Facebook group, Facebook page, and Twitter handle, as well as its mobile application and website through a thematic content analysis.

Perspectives

It was great feelings to get this study out because this is the first article on digital health in Pakistan.
