What is it about?

What make students success in learning algebra? We analyzed students' prior year's achievement as well as their demographic data. Our study reveals that the student's previous year's mastering sub-content of "rational number" is a strong predictor to their algebra success.

Why is it important?

Our findings show that in order to prepare students for algebra learning success, we may need to pay attention to the foundational skills and knowledge in "rational number." Rushing students into eighth-grade algebra class without such preparation would not be effective for their learning success.

Perspectives

Enabling students to own learning success is a great motivation of my study. By identifying specific mathematics content knowledge and skills that prepare students for algebra, I hope it would assist teachers and education policymakers to focus on giving students the right preparation for algebra so that they can achieve learning success with a solid foundation.
