What is it about?

Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease is identified as the main risk factor for damaging the testicular germinal epithelium. Metabolic syndrome, diabetes or even being older than 50 years were not associated with testicular damage, whereas fatty liver was strongly associated with loss of germinal epithelium. This could mean that the health status of the liver is the main factor related to the health of the testicle.

Why is it important?

This is the first study to identify an association between Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and testicular damage in humans. The fact that both pathologies are associated can facilitate therapeutic strategies to try to revert the testicular damage, because strategies used to reduce the Fatty Liver Disease could be useful to simultaneously reduce and / or prevent testicular damage.

Perspectives

Future studies with a larger number of patients are necessary to confirm the findings.
