What is it about?

Ryan LaMothe, Ph.D. wrote "Empire Matters: Implications for Pastoral Care for the Journal of Pastoral Care & Counseling published in 2007. I along with several others wrote responses to his article. He also responded to our response. These responses were published in Vol 61 , #5, supplement, 2007. Dr. LaMothe argued that American involvement in other countries amounts to expansionist aims such as political, economic and military domination, as well as Christian theological contradictions. And it therefore has implications for pastoral care.

Why is it important?

Dr. Lamothe's argument is persuasive , provocative and challenging. It causes pastoral caregivers to think more globally in terms of pastoral care which we apply on a one-one personal basis. It effectively brings together political issues and pastoral care.

Perspectives

My response addresses his concept that america is an empire whose citizens grow up internalizing the values of an "empire psyche." I direct my comments toward three areas: whether America is actually an empire, the issue of the "American Jesus," and some thoughts about his pastoral responses ( regarding America as an empire).
