What is it about?

This research investigates the relationship between the cross-cultural communication competence of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball coaches and the collective efficacy of multicultural NCAA basketball teams. The results of the data analysis indicated that increased cross-cultural communication competence of NCAA basketball coaches positively impacts their team’s collective efficacy. The cultural empathy, cultural uncertainty, communication bias, and communication engagement dimensions of the cross-cultural communication measure all statistically predicted a rise in the team effectiveness, a dimension of collective efficacy.

Why is it important?

Given the well-supported relationship between collective efficacy and team performance in business, this study produces important implications for scholars and practitioners working with multicultural sporting teams. This research confirms the relevance of cross-cultural communication competence in sports management and its effect on coaching multicultural sporting teams while revealing its limitations, particularly on the performance ability of teams, on which the components of cross-cultural communication had no significant impact.


This research investigates the impact of cross-cultural communication competence on the collective efficacy of multicultural sport teams and unpacks the relationship between the sub-dimensions of cross-cultural communication competence and collective efficacy. The focus on NCCA basketball teams is supported by all having the same performance objectives, and rules on team composition, which lessens the ‘surface-level’ aspects of diversity, such as age and minimum academic grades.
