What is it about?

Foreign language anxiety plays an important role in the process of learning a foreign language. This paper shows that highly anxious children can reduce their anxiety if they are singing songs in a foreign language during classes.

Why is it important?

Identifying strategies that can be used in the foreign language classroom to lower students' anxiety can lead to improvement of the quality of the instruction. This study shows the positive impact of singing songs during foreign language classes on students' anxiety.

Perspectives

This is probably the first rigurously conducted experimental study that shows a clear ecologically-valid causation effect between singing songs in a foreign language and students' anxiety.
