How do electronic networks affect our understanding of ourselves in contemporary urban environments?

Why is it important?
Contemporary cities are battlegrounds where divisions of race, gender and sexuality contribute to conflicts produced by increasing poverty and precarious lifestyles. This essay looks at how we develop mental maps of the cities that we inhabit and how this cognitive mapping contributes to how we understand what it means to be human.
Perspectives
This essay introduces some of the ideas in my forthcoming book, Posthuman Urbanism: Mapping Bodies in Contemporary City Space. Significantly, it proposes that the figure of the flaneur, an imagined inhabitant of 19th century Paris, is alive and well and living in cyberspace.
