Why is it important?

Restraint and seclusion is a hotly debated issue in special and general education. Numerous federal and advocacy reports have documented problems associated with restraint and seclusion, including potential for injury to students and staff. Federal and state legislation has been proposed and/or enacted to better regulate and limit the misuse of these practices in school settings. We suggest that there are also potential ethical issues in the use of restraint and seclusion, which may violate accepted standards for professional practice.
